I feel somewhat let down by the reviews for Shutter Island. It's something I had been looking forward to seeing. I'm a huge fan of Leonardo DiCaprio's work so I have been waiting for Shutter Island to open today for quite some time. But, the reviews are also out this morning and the weather forecast on Shutter Island seems somewhat bleak. It has all the right ingredients. Good concept, good director and great actors. But it seems to have been a case where too many cooks spoil the broth.
While 'Rolling Stone” gave it 3.4/4 stars, the imdb rating is above 8, and rotten tomatoes currently counts 19 “fresh and 9 “Rotten” results - Following the Australian opening this morning, the review on news.com.au's “Hit Entertainment” is bad like a tsunami just hit that idyllic view for the island. The words “ploddy plonker,” and “lemon” were used, and not lightly, I suspect.
I want to believe the many good reviews, I do. But there's an honesty to the review on news.com.au that the others simply don't have. I do notice the dates on any positive review for “Shutter Island,” seem to have come out of the opening in Germany's Film Festival on the 13th of February where audiences would have likely been carefully selected by the producers. As the reviewer on 'Hit Entertainment,' questioned the delays of the film until after the Oscars, I find myself recalling the over-zealous adverts everywhere. For a film with so many big names, including the powerful combination of Scorsese and DiCaprio, the posters at every metro stop and every webpage seemed a bit excessively unnecessary.
Having grown a bit wary of such a strangely high rating on imdb by 10am on a weekday in the country to receive the film first - I began looking more questioningly to the release dates of the movie. As though to verify the suspicions Leigh Paatsch at 'Hit Entertainment,' the dates do indeed seem to have been designed to minimise bad reviews. The release dates for English speaking nations have been spread out quite widely. Following the opening at the Berlin Film Festival, the first countries to receive Shutter Island, are: Argentina, Australia, Denmark, Kazakhstan, Netherlands, and Russia. Due to the International timeline this makes Australia the first country to receive Shutter Island; followed by 5 countries which do not have English (the language of the movie) as a first language. Release Dates for the 19th of February also present only two English speaking nations, the USA and Canada. Following those dates, is a hiatus of a few days before the release to more non-english nations as though to ease the fallout before New Zealand on the 25th. The UK won't receive Shutter Island until the 12th of March. If you look at most cinematic releases, this is an extremely odd set of dates. Usually Australia and New Zealand would be near the end, and the UK near the top.
I had been happy that for once Australia got the movie first, now I question if it wasn't due to the fact that bad reviews from Australia are less likely to affect the US box office sales than bad reviews from the UK will. Most viewers in Canada and the USA will trust those 'friendly reviewers' happily selected for the German opening, over news.com.au! Also, imdb ratings will be somewhat kinder this way around as Australian viewers will be more forgiving simply to have seen the movie before everyone else for once.
Early reviews from the premiere in the US are now filtering out and they seem to remain mixed. “Brand X” begins; “Martin Scorsese is a great director, but “Shutter Island” is not a great film. Whether it's even a good film is debatable; your reaction is likely to depend on your tolerance for certain narrative devices (i.e., tricks)” Star-Telegram gave the movie a good review, but it did still use the term “B-Movie.” The Canadian Press reviewed; “”Shutter Island” is long and wearying - brilliantly constructed, obsessively detailed, yet dramatically a piece of pulp schlock that's been overdressed and overstuffed to disguise a ponderous and absurd story.” By contrast; any positive review I could find for the film seemed, impersonal. As though the reviewers had written their stories weeks ago based on the trailers and synopsis' and these reviews typically lacked references to the use of fog and such which leads me to believe that possibly they were pre-written reviews.
I waited a long time for a new DiCaprio flick, but weighing the good and bad reviews, and there are many good reviews also, it just seems to me that the most honest feeling reviews - are sadly the bad ones. I will wait a little bit longer for the dvd I think. This doesn't seem to be the next “Gangs of New York,” or “Blood Diamond.”
